Occupational Impact is a private practice managed by Vicki Strelan from her base in Townsville. With more than two decades of experience in occupational therapy, Vicki offers experienced consultancy to the general public, employers, insurers and health providers.

Broad experience

Vicki completed her Occupational Therapy degree in 1989 and spent her first five years working in South Australia in the field of neurology, including spinal cord injury, acquired brain injury and stroke rehabilitation. From 1995 to 1997 Vicki worked in adult physical rehabilitation in Darwin public and private sectors.

Specialisations

Hand therapy. Vicki has been interested in hand therapy since her student days and has carried a hand and upper limb caseload since graduating in 1989. In 1998 Vicki completed a graduate diploma in hand and upper limb rehabilitation.

Soft tissue injury management (STIM). Vicki’s studies and her years of experience treating clients successfully using STIM have proven the value of this practical therapy. Vicki uses STIM to prevent and treat injury, pain, stress and fatigue.

Mindfulness.  As part of Vicki’s holistic approach to treatment, Vicki trained in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) in 2007. Vicki uses ACT mindfulness techniques to complement STIM and other physical therapies.

Professional networks

Vicki has enjoyed a strong working relationship with government agencies, heavy industry and small business, as well as her fellow health professionals. Vicki has spoken at international medical and rehabilitation conferences in Australia and New Zealand. She is currently elected to a panel of assessors for occupational therapy to advise the Queensland Minister of Health. Vicki has been on the academic staff at James Cook University and has been guest lecturing there since 2000. Vicki was selected for the inaugural ‘Women in Business’ mentoring program in 2000 and took part in the Strive ‘Go for Growth’ program in 2003. Vicki has joined with other health providers in founding a Mindfulness network in Townsville.

In 2010 the Australian Hand Therapy Association selected Vicki to be the Queensland presenter of the Trauma course level 1 and 2.
